Leena Kapoor talks about moving on after the Asad Rauf controversy

Asad Rauf has been dropped from the ICC’s (International Cricket Council) elite panel of umpires. Do you feel vindicated?
Certainly. My allegation that he cheated me and others has been proved right. While I was with him, I didn’t know about his alleged involvement in ‘match fixing’. I found out from media reports. Guess, bure karmo ka anth bura hi hota hai. I am glad that this controversy happened after my relationship with him was over.
Have you moved on in life?
I am meeting people for auditions. There are disappointments, but that is part and parcel of this industry. One needs to take it with a pinch of salt. Initially, I was disheartened that my association with Asad and my police complaint came in the way of my career, but not anymore.
What had Asad promised you?
He boasted about knowing top actors. He would say, ‘I have great connections in the film industry’ and I fell for it. I did not know he was exploiting me and my emotions. He would even introduce me as his begum to people. I had started dreaming of marriage, but not anymore. I need to make a career and will prove to the world that I have the potential.
You had earlier said that the controversy affected your career. How do you look at it now?
There were times when I lost work because of my link with Asad and the police complaint. But in today’s world, controversies are not considered as setbacks. For many people, it has been their USP. I hope it happens in my case also.
What do you want now?
I want my parents and family to accept me. It is not easy to live alone in this city. Accommodation becomes a problem for girls, especially if you are involved in a controversy. But Mumbai is a city of dreams, a city that accommodates everyone. I know it will embrace me too.
Any film or TV offers?
I have offers from reality shows and films. I am also shooting a lot of TV commercials, print ads and catalogues. I am waiting for a big break on the big screen.
