Bollywood music report Jan-June 2013

Romantic music and new singers top the charts (based on Radio Mirchi Top 20)

The year 2013 has seen some interesting trends emerge more strongly than ever before, within Bollywood music. We have seen a lot of new talent come up, which is reflected in the fact that our top six songs in the first half of the year are all sung by new and younger voices. Not just some of our music directors, but some of our lyricists too, have turned singers, be it Swanand Kirkire or Amitabh Bhattacharya. Amongst the music directors, barring Pritam and a few others, almost all sing.
Our tastes have become more eclectic and today at one level, while an item song like Lat Lag Gayee is popular, we also have an appetite for a folk-based song like Manja or a slow romantic song like Tum Hi Ho. Pakistani voices continue to lure us and while CDs may have almost stopped selling, the digital music industry is booming. We bring you top albums, top songs and new voices to watch out for.
