RANBIR IS BOLD ENOUGH TO LAUGH AT HIMSELF

Abhinav Kashyap talks about why he chose the actor for Besharam

In Abhinav Singh Kashyap’s Besharam, Ranbir Kapoor will play a mechanic named Babli, an orphan from Delhi. A spontaneous and shameless person, Babli lives life on his own terms and doesn’t think about the repercussions of his actions. The film also stars Neetu and Rishi Kapoor, and Pallavi Sharda.
Abhinav says Ranbir was the obvious choice for the role. “I needed someone who doesn’t take himself too seriously. The title of my movie is Besharam, because Babli is shameless. Ranbir is bold enough to laugh at himself. I always knew that about him. He is fairly detached and I needed that quality in my actor. Even before Ranbir did Rockstar, I had full faith in him. Now, I am just letting everyone else do the talking. Also, his great run at the the Box Office is working to my advantage.”
The film’s trailer was launched recently and the director has been keeping a tab on the reactions. “I like to keep track of what’s happening around me. The reactions have been encouraging. The trade, my friends and the industry seem to have liked the trailer. But there have been some mixed reactions on the internet. Some people haven’t taken too well to the jokes, but once they see the film, I am sure they will like the context that the jokes have been used in.”
Considering he has now worked with two of the biggest stars — Abhinav had made Dabangg (2010) with Salman Khan — is he nervous? “No, pressure is good. I like people to have expectations from me. That will only push me to perform better. When people say I have been lucky to have Ranbir in my second film after Salman, I agree. It isn’t a high for me, but I say, I am lucky to be lucky as well,” he says.
Besharam, produced by Himanshu Mehra, Sanjeev Gupta and Reliance Entertainment, releases October 2.
