The most exciting part about filmmaking is creating music

The music album of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is an amalgamation of different genres. The songs, especially the rock version of the title track, has created a buzz in B-Town.
Prasoon Joshi, the scriptwriter as well as the lyricist of the film, says it was doubly challenging for him to recreate the same situations without being repetitive. “I had to interpret the same scenes twice — through the script and the songs. Adding another layer to what I had already written was a real challenge. Once I finished writing the script, I took a twomonth break and that helped immensely — it gave me a fresh perspective. I had left a few blanks in the script. I filled those blanks with the songs,” he explains. Farhan Akhtar plays the legendary sprinter, Milkha Singh, in the film.
Rakeysh’s friendship with Prasoon goes a long way back. The latter had written the dialogues for Rang De Basanti, directed by Rakeysh. Says the director, “For me, the most exciting part about making a film is creating its music. I like spending time in the studios, jamming with the musicians. I connect with Prasoon on a different level. For me, he is a poet, not a lyricist. My approach to the film is about finding that Milkha in all of us; it’s not about Milkha, the athlete. Prasoon has interpreted the songs beautifully and given it character. The rock version track sung by Siddharth Mahadevan, Shankar’s son, is inspirational.”
About music composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Rakeysh says, “Loy is a jazz musician while Shankar is a trained Carnatic singer. Ehsaan, on the other hand, is a rock guitarist. Milkha is a person with various layers to his character. The music also had to reflect that fusion.”
Echoing Rakeysh’s thoughts, the composers say, “Working with old friends is always a pleasure. BMB’s music is earthy and powerful, yet simple and deep — just like Milkha himself.”
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, produced by ROMP Pictures and Viacom18 Motion Pictures, releases 12 July.
