10 reasons for the iPhone X

If you had to pick the one thing that differentiates the iPhone X from any other smartphone, it is its “edge-to-edge” 5.8-inch, 2436x1125px display that is capable of sharp text, crisp visuals, and colours that are near accurate, with very little artificial saturation.

The front and the rear of the iPhone X is made up of reinforced glass, while the band that makes up its sides is fabricated out of “surgical-grade” stainless steel for added strength. The device carries an IP67 rating which means it is resistant to dust and can withstand immersion in up to one metre of water for 30 minutes. True to its rating, the device easily survives a dunk in H2O, and it’s safe to say that a walk in the rain will not put it out of commission either.

The iPhone X feels solid, but we would still recommend a case to protect its screen and rear glass panel against accidental falls.

The glass back of the iPhone X includes an embedded charging system, known as Qi, that lets you juice up the device’s battery by simply placing it on charging surfaces or mats. At present, you will have to make do with wireless chargers from brands like Belkin, Samsung and Mophie. Apple plans to launch its proprietary fast-charging ‘AirPower mat’ only in 2018.

Qi chargers work with the protective cases that Apple retails themselves, and almost any cover that’s not too thick and which does not include metal in its fabrication. Still, we recommend you err on the side of caution, and opt for an iPhone cover/casing that’s tried and tested.

The iPhone X is powered by Apple’s new A11 Bionic chip. Its CPU comprises two “performance cores” and four “high-efficiency cores”, while its three-core GPU is fine-tuned to handle 3D games as well as Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Apple says its new CPU can harness all six cores simultaneously whenever applications demand extra processing power. This is a clear improvement over last year’s quadcore A10 Fusion chip where only two cores could be active at any given point of time.

The A11 also features a new dual-core neural engine that is built for machine learning, and it is this artificial intelligence that powers new features such as Face ID and Animoji.

In benchmark tests, the iPhone X outclassed last year’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and also bested the scores posted by each and every Android handset we’ve tested this year, including the OnePlus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The iPhone 8 is the only device that out-performed this handset.

As far as real-world use is concerned, it is safe to assume that if the iPhone X cannot handle any task, no other smartphone would be able to either.

The iPhone X does away with a fingerprint reader, and instead uses facial recognition to unlock the device. To achieve this, the handset is equipped with Apple’s proprietary TrueDepth camera system. This comprises a Dot Projector, Infrared Camera and Flood Illuminator.

The Dot Projector casts more than 30,000 invisible dots on a user’s face to build an encrypted facial map that’s stored only on the device. Subsequently, every time a user tries to unlock the handset, the infrared camera captures this facial geometry and sends it to the A11 Bionic chip to confirm a match. The Flood Illuminator allows the TrueDepth System to identify a user even in the dark.

Since Face ID also captures depth information, the iPhone X cannot be unlocked with a photograph. It also recognises if the user’s eyes are open and looking towards the device to prevent someone from unlocking the device when you are asleep. The technology uses the neural engine to automatically recognise changes—such as makeup or a beard—in your appearance.

As an additional failsafe, Face ID allows only five unsuccessful match attempts before it requires you to enter the backup PIN you created at the time of setup. Face ID works consistently to unlock the device, even in pitch darkness. It is also designed to work with hats, glasses, contact lens and some tinted sunglasses. Apple says this technology is approximately 20 times more secure than its fingerprint-based Touch ID.

It’s hardly been a week since the iPhone X has hit markets, and already Animojis are a rage all over the internet. The TrueDepth camera system – when coupled with the processing muscle in this handset – captures and analyses over 50 facial muscle movements to create a dozen different animated emojis such as a bunny, fox, puppy, rooster, and unicorn.

This means you can record 10-second voice messages that are played back instantly using these 3D characters that lip-sync to whatever you’re saying.

Animoji messages can be played back on any handset, but, of course, you can only create these on the iPhone X.

The cameras on the iPhone X are one of the best on smartphones today. They capture colours that are true to life, without any over saturation. Besides, their high-dynamic range even picks up the darkest areas in a scene with great details. You also get a Portrait mode for images with a wonderful depth-of-field effect. Plus, there is no denying that the video captures on this new Apple handset—with crisp audio capture—is the best in class; enough to allow you to shoot hi-res YouTube videos, and even amateur 4K movies without investing in high-end camera equipment.

The iPhone X now comes with a ‘Portrait Lighting’ feature. This mode is possible because of the handset’s dual rear shooters, and its TrueDepth camera at the front. It allows you to apply five lighting effects to your portraits: ‘Natural’ where the subject’s face is in sharp focus against a blurred background, ‘Studio’ for a brightly lit-up subject, ‘Contour’ for dramatic highlights and lowlights, ‘Stage’ where the subject is spot-lit against a black background, and ‘Stage mono’ which is similar to Stage, but in B&W.

So whether you want to shoot panorama photos; slow motion, time-lapse, Full HD, or 4K videos—along with image stabilisation and even zoom—all your needs will be met with the iPhone X. Besides, this device will even let you edit these high-resolution photos and videos without any stutter, thanks to its powerful A11 Bionic chip.

The iPhone X is future-proof. With the new iOS 11 operating system, developers are provided with tools—known as ARKit—that will allow them to build augmented reality apps. Users can expect to see educational content, multimedia entertainment, measuring tools, 3D scanners and even games that will leverage on this technology where digital objects and information are blended with the environment around you to create a more immersive experience.

The iPhone X comes with preinstalled apps such as Weather (for daily and weekly forecasts), Notes and Voice Memos (for quick scribbles and musings), Calendar and Reminders (to add tasks and set schedules), Health (to monitor your physical wellbeing), GarageBand (to compose music), Keynote (for presentations), Numbers (for spreadsheets), Pages (to create documents), iMovie(for movieediting on the fly), iTunes Store (for movies and music), and iTunes U (for educational content).

Apple has also baked QR coderecognition into the camera app, so now you can point the device at a code, and you will see a context sensitive popup that will offer to open a web page in Safari, or add phone numbers and emails to your contacts.

OS 11 now also comes with a new ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode that detects when you are driving, and sends customised responses to the people you specify. You can easily disable this mode from the DND pop up if you are not at the wheel yourself.

And, of course, Siri, Apple’s digital voice-based assistant works well with Indian accents and can be used to access apps, initiate searches, and even play music with simple voice commands.

Besides, the App Store has now been completely redesigned to help users find new and relevant apps. A new ‘Today’ tab highlights “best new apps”, while tabs for ‘Apps’ and ‘Games’ feature picks by Apple’s app editors as well as chart toppers.

There is no home button on the iPhone X, which is why Apple has introduced new control gestures. Some of these include…

Raise the device and look at it to unlock with Face ID

Swipe from the top right corner to access the Control Centre, which reveals quick access to network settings (airplane mode, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth), display brightness, night mode, camera and flashlight.

Swipe from the bottom edge to access the home screen.

From an open app, swipe up from the bottom edge and hold to access the App Switcher. Long press on the windows that appear to access the option to close open apps.

Press and hold the right-side button to ask Siri a question.

Simultaneously press and quickly release the right-side button and volume-up button to take a screen shot.

Press and hold the side button and either volume button to turn off the iPhone.

why India is the most expensive place to buy an iPhone 6S

Seven reasons why India is the most expensive place to buy an iPhone 6S

For at least a couple of years, Apple has been trying to reel in more buyers in India, which is dominated by sub-Rs 10,000 Android phones, by striking deals with specialised distribution companies and selling older models for lower prices long after they have been discontinued in the US.

The iPhone 6S is finally available in India. But unless you are one of these people , who cares? With features like 3D Touch and Live Photos, Apple’s latest phone is possibly one of the best smartphones on the planet. The problem is it costs as much as a small vacation in India.

Pricing starts at Rs 62,000 for the basic 16 GB version and goes all the way up to Rs 92,000 if you want the highest-end 128 GB iPhone 6S Plus. In fact, India is the most expensive country to buy iPhone 6S.

That doesn’t seem right. For at least a couple of years, Apple has been trying to reel in more buyers in India, which is dominated by sub-Rs 10,000 Android phones, by striking deals with specialised distribution companies and selling older models for lower prices long after they have been discontinued in the US.

Pricing a phone out of the reach of even your average, well-heeled urban customer seems, therefore, particularly hare-brained – but there are reasons.

A weaker rupee

Here’s what happened to the Indian rupee since the iPhone 6 was released in the country this time last year: It tanked. According to the Reserve Bank of India, the US dollar was Rs 61.61 in October 2014. In October 2015, it was Rs 65.74. That’s a 6.2% increase. In comparison, the iPhone 6S is 13.7% more expensive than the iPhone 6.

Naturally, that’s not an, ahem, apples to apples comparison, since there are other factors besides the value of the rupee that influence iPhone pricing in India, but “a weaker rupee” is one of the reasons that technology enthusiasts on Twitter like to bring up when asked about Apple’s crazy iPhone 6S pricing this year.

Experts say that they’re only partially right and point to China, which devalued the yuan by 4.4% in August to boost its domestic economy. “By that logic, the price of the iPhone 6S in China should have been much higher this year,” says Tarun Pathak, senior mobile device analyst at market research agency Counterpoint Research.

This isn’t the case, because the iPhone 6S costs $832 in China, a full $124 less than its Indian price of $956.

A buffer against currency fluctuation

In November 2014, the Russian rouble lost 30% versus the US dollar amid falling oil prices and economic sanctions against Russia. In response, Apple hiked iPhone prices by 25%. In less than a month, it halted iPhone sales in Russia entirely, citing “extreme” rouble fluctuations. When Apple opened its online store again in late December, customers balked at the prices, which had been hiked by a further 35%.

“It’s not a scenario that Apple ever wants to be in again,” says Pathak. Granted, the rupee isn’t nearly as unstable as the rouble was in 2014, but Apple’s taking no chances. “The higher pricing of the iPhone 6S includes a built-in buffer, because changing pricing halfway through a cycle is terrible for sales and is not consistent with Apple’s policies.”

So you’re basically paying extra…just in case. Life’s unfair.

More taxes

During the budget session of Parliament in February, finance minister Arun Jaitley announced the government was making locally manufactured mobiles and tablets cheaper and jacking up the excise duty on imported devices from 6% to 12.5%.

The rise in import duty meant Apple had to increase pricing on the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6 by approximately Rs 3,000 on each model.

So yes, you can put at least some blame on the government if you can’t afford an iPhone 6S this year.

The iPhone 4S was released in India in November 2011 for Rs. 44,500, and for a full year, till the iPhone 5 was launched, that was the price it was sold at – no price drops, no discounts.

Apple products were notorious for never getting price cuts, but there was a flipside: You could confidently buy a new iPhone the day it released, without fretting that it would be cheaper in a month or two.

“There was buyer’s certainty with iPhones before,” says Rohan Naravane, head of content at price comparison portal

Then, Flipkart happened, and Snapdeal, and Amazon, and PayTM, and everything, including iPhones, started getting heavily discounted.

In fact, we could have reached peak iPhone discounts: As a part of Flipkart’s Big Billion Days sale this year, you could buy an iPhone 6 for as low as Rs 25,000 if you had an iPhone 5S to swap. Snapdeal had a dozen offers, including freebies like 60 GB of 4G data if you switched to the 6S, and PayTM had a coupon code that shaved off a full Rs 6,000 off the price of the 6S.

“E-commerce discounting is now a phenomenon in India and Apple knows this,” says Naravane. “I wouldn’t be surprised if prices of the 6S come down in six months or so.”

Mind games

Apple isn’t above messing with your brain. The iPhone 6, which, till now, was the latest, greatest Apple device you could buy, suddenly saw its official pricing drop from the mid-50s to low-40s (and, in some cases, even lower).

“Now I’m thinking that a Rs 40,000 iPhone 6 is actually a good deal,” says Naravane, “So job well done, Apple.” Naravane adds this is a deliberate move by the company to make its products seem relatively affordable, when they are still much more expensive when you compare them to the competition.

Maintaining a premium position

This is going to sound funny – but one of the reasons behind the iPhone’s sky-high price is because Apple wants to be the most expensive smartphone in the market.

“Apple doesn’t want to lose its premium, aspirational slot,” says Pathak. “So it’s deliberately pricing the iPhone 6S more than its immediate competition.”

Indeed, pricing for premium smartphones across the board has gone up this year. Devices like Samsung’s flagship, the Galaxy S6, which the company positions as a direct competitor to the iPhone, cost Rs 56,700. The Galaxy S6 Edge+, Samsung’s other flagship this year, starts at Rs 57,900. (These are official company prices. You can get them cheaper on e-commerce websites.)

The iPhone 6S, with its price tag of Rs 62,000, manages to be ever so slightly ahead of them.

More iPhones, not iPhone 6Ss

It might seem incredible, but Apple actually has an iPhone in every price bracket – from the budget to the ultra-premium. The iPhone 4S, the oldest iPhone you can buy right now in India, is Rs 13,000 on Snapdeal; the 5S is in the high-20s; the 6 is in the low-40s; the 6 Plus is in the low-50s; and the 6S and the 6S Plus are in the low-60s and low-70s respectively.

This, Pathak believes, is a key part of Apple’s India strategy. “The price gap between the newest iPhones and the older models is so much that more people will invariably end up buying the older models,” he says.

This is true. According to Counterpoint’s data, the iPhone 6 accounted for less than 50% of the 1.7 million iPhones that Apple sold in India this fiscal. The rest was a mix of the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 4S.

Pathak says Apple is totally fine with this. “Apple only accounts for about 3.5 million of India’s 170 million smartphones,” he says. “So right now, they care about getting more people into the Apple ecosystem, rather than getting them to use the latest Apple device.”

This is unlike the US, where the iPhone market is so saturated that Apple now offers its own instalment plan to get people to upgrade to the latest iPhone every single year.

“At the end of the day,” says Pathak, “it’s a gain for Apple in any which way.”

‘I want to buy a phone and my budget is about Rs 10,000.’

The ultimate guide for buying smartphones under Rs 10,000

Dazen phones (left) were launched under the Coolpad name, but now they’re under Qiku; with great looks, fantastic specs and a full-HD screen, the Lenovo K3 Note (right) started the war in the under-10K market.

‘I want to buy a phone and my budget is about Rs 10,000.’

If I had a penny for every time I was asked this question, I would be a very rich man. The under-10K category is the new battleground in the Indian smartphone market.

A market so hot, that more than 40 companies are vying for a piece of this pie and another 20 are about to join in. India is the place to be, and if your phone sells here, you’re on your way to global domination.

The problem with this category is that it’s too much of a good thing. Almost every company is now adopting the mantra of selling an amazing high-end phone at an amazing low-end price.

Unfortunately, it’s all quite confusing and cluttered, with mind-numbing specs and jargon being thrown around. It’s tough for any brand to stand out, tougher for consumers to differentiate between two options, and almost impossible to make the right buying decision. So, here is my contribution to this social cause. A brutally honest buying-guide, as well as a frank advisory for brands on how to make their products stand out.

Lenovo K3 Note
This is where the battle started. A very well-made phone with a 5.5inch full-HD screen from a company as well-known as Lenovo set the cat amongst the pigeons. Excellent processor, 2GB RAM, 13MP rear and 5MP front camera, and 2900mAh battery. This phone is all good looks mixed with great quality, and you really can’t go wrong with it.

Note to Lenovo: Good job on this one, but you’re flooding the under-10K market with too many products, coming in way too fast. I know you’re raking it in with your online-only model and selling serious numbers, but of late, it’s getting confusing for the buyer. You bring out the A6000, and days later, the A6000 Plus surfaces, with not much in the ‘Plus’ department. Stop milking the cash cow like Samsung and just be yourself.

Yureka Plus (Micromax)
This one has great design – some metallic touches to it – a super full-HD 5.5inch screen, 2GB RAM, a fantastic processor, CyanogenMod 12 OS (which gives a whole lot of ‘do it yourself’ features), 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras, and 2500mAh Li-Ion battery. Sounds like I’m describing the Lenovo Note 3 again? Nope, this is the Yureka Plus that also gets it just right, and then adds two colour options. The previous version had heating issues and would freeze out, but this one gets it just right.

The comeback: Yureka Plus solved its predecessor’s heating issues and added two colour options.

Note to Micromax: Yes, I know you’re never happy when I attach Micromax ’s name to the Yureka brand. Sorry MM, but as of now, there is no getting away from it and it does lead to better buying confidence for the customer. So, don’t resist it, don’t fight it. Just be a little careful with some of the products that you bring out under the sub-brand, Yureka. Your fitness band and the previous Yureka model left some customers disappointed. It’s a tough market and you’re only as good as your last product.

Coolpad Note 3
Samsung should be a very happy company. Almost every brand wants to cash in on their ‘Note’ moniker. Here’s one more. Coolpad’s Note 3 has taken this market by a storm. A fingerprint scanner, 3GB RAM, HD screen and great optics – all for Rs 8,999. Yes, everything that you would have paid 50K for, now under the magic 10K line. It’s nice-looking with a sharp screen, and will also be available in rose gold in a few days. The fingerprint scanner actually works really well. This one sets up Coolpad very well for a long innings in India.

Note to Coolpad: Great job with this phone, and thanks for breaking the price barrier for a fingerprint scanner. It’s a little confusing though, that you had launched the Dazen phone under your name just a few days ago, and now it’s under a new company called Qiku. There’s enough confusion in the Indian market. Try not to add to it so dramatically!

And there’s so much more

Lots of other really good phones out there. The Moto G (2nd Gen) or even the 3rd Gen (for a little more) are awesome phones. The Asus Zenphone2 Laser is brilliant with its optics and camera. The Meizu M2 Note (yes another Note!) is really good-looking with great features and clocks in at an astounding Rs 6,999.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G is priced at Rs 7,999 now and has seriously good battery life along with nice features. And the Coolpad (Qiku?) Dazen 1 is easily the best phone in its class at Rs 5,999 with astounding features and specs. I’ve highlighted three phones in the beginning, because it’s really tough to be the best in this category.

A new wave

But these three phones can’t bask in the glory just as yet. In the next few days, the onslaught will intensify. Coming up are new phones from Qiku, a dual assault from Obi (the John Sculley phones), Acer will bring out a very aggressive portfolio and some new arsenal from Samsung, Gionee, Huawei, Panasonic and Alcatel. It’s a Diwali that’s going to be deafening and almost all the explosions are going to be under 10K!

There is very simple solution,

  1. Go to WHM panel or with Hosting administrator.
  2. If you have WHM then change Disk size of your Domain or ask Administrator to increase size of disk of your domain. OR Delete unnecessary items from your file manager of your Cpanel of your domain.
  3. Logout from opencart panel then relogin, problem will get solved.
